About the school…
The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, Autism, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) within the secondary school setting.
The classes are small, of about 6 to 8 pupils to support their learning with teaching assistants in each class.
About the role…
To work under the guidance of teaching staff and the SENCO to support the teaching and learning of pupils with a range of special educational needs. The HLTA will deliver learning activities, support pupil development, and contribute to the planning, preparation, and assessment of lessons. They will also provide mentoring, supervision, and personalised intervention to enable pupils to reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities…
- Plan, prepare, and deliver tailored learning activities to individuals and small groups under the guidance of a teacher.
- Lead lessons and cover classes in the absence of a teacher, as required.
- Adapt and differentiate resources to meet individual pupil needs.
- Support pupils with a range of SEN including autism, ADHD, speech and language difficulties, SEMH needs, and learning difficulties.
- Establish supportive relationships with pupils, encouraging independence and self-confidence.
- Promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation, and wellbeing through appropriate strategies.
- Assist with personal care and mobility needs as required (e.g. toileting, feeding, hoisting).
- Monitor and assess pupils’ progress, providing feedback to teachers and contributing to reports and reviews (e.g. EHCP reviews).
- Maintain accurate records of interventions and outcomes.
- Attend and contribute to meetings, training, and development sessions as required.
- Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people in line with the school’s safeguarding and child protection policies.
Requirements…
- HLTA status or equivalent qualification
- Experience working with children with SEN in an educational setting
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to manage behaviour positively and adapt to the emotional and physical needs of pupils
- A flexible, resilient, and patient approach
- Commitment to inclusive education and equal opportunities
- Experience in delivering interventions or leading whole class sessions
- Knowledge of autism, sensory processing, or specific learning difficulties
- First aid, Team Teach, or other relevant training
